Brown Falls At Home to UMass Lowell

The Brown men’s basketball team fell to UMass Lowell 73-62 Wednesday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Despite an eight-point halftime lead, the Bears could not hold on down the stretch as the River Hawks outscored the Bears 41-23 in the second half.

“We have to find a level of consistency that will allow us to win those kinds of games against a really good team,” head coach Mike Martin ’04 said. “Their experience, their physicality, they’re obviously really well coached.

“There were great moments for us tonight, but obviously way too many turnovers throughout the game. I thought our defense was hurt by our offense in the second half. Too many turnovers and too many points off our turnovers.

“There are some things we can look back at and feel okay about, but ultimately, it’s a 40-minute game and if you want to beat a team like them, you have to execute, play well, and do it for 40 minutes.”

Lowell opened the game by hitting five straight shots, but luckily for the Bears, Paxson Wojcik was 3-for-3 on his first three attempts from long range to keep Brown right there with the River Hawks. After Wojcik’s third three, Lowell led 13-11 with 16:14 remaining in the opening half.

The River Hawks would stretch their lead to nine at 25-16, but that’s when the Bears found another gear. For the final nine minutes of the first half, Brown outscored Lowell 23-6 by shooting 81.8% (9-for-11) during that run. The Bears led 39-32 headed into the half.

But to open the second half, Brown’s offense began to struggle as they managed just nine points through the first 12 minutes of the half. Lowell led 59-48 with eight minutes remaining in the game.

After a three-point play by Aaron Cooley with 2:15 left, the Bears had cut the River Hawk lead to just six at 65-59, but that’s as close as they would get. Lowell closed the game with eight of the final 11 points to claim the victory.

Wojcik led the Bears with 17 points on a career-high five made threes. He added four rebounds and three steals as well. Nana Owusu-Anane had 14 points, nine rebounds, and four steals for the Bears, while Kino Lilly Jr. netted his fifth straight double-digit scoring performance with 11.

Brown will return to action this Sunday, Nov. 27 with a 2 p.m. matchup with Maine at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
